The Onam Festival is a vibrant harvest festival celebrated in the Indian state of Kerala. Legend has it that the mythical king Mahabali, or Maveli, returns to his lands on the day of Thiruvonam. His subjects celebrate the Golden Era when his kingdom flourished and he achieved unprecedented power.
The gods were afraid of his growing popularity and turned to Lord Vishnu for help. Vishnu, the patron saint of Mahabali, appeared to him in the fifteenth avatar, in the form of a poor dwarf brahmin named Vamana. The king, after morning prayer, traditionally gave alms to the brahmins.
The masked Vishnu asked Mahabali for a piece of land that he could cover with three steps. The king gladly agreed. Suddenly, Vamana began to grow, and with one step he covered the entire earth, and with the second he covered the sky. He was so tall that his feet reached the sky.
Then Vamana asked where he should put the third step. Mahabali realized that this was not an ordinary brahmin and asked him to put his foot on his head. Vishnu complied with the request, but instead of thanking him, he pushed the king into the underworld — patala. This blessing freed Mahabali from the cycle of rebirth, and now, on the Onam holiday, people decide to live an honest, pious, loving and humble life and renew their clothes....
